Tarangire River Camp

Style Tented camp
Rooms 8
From $265 pp/night
Board Full board, park fees excluded
Best for Elephant, birders, a first or last night close to Arusha

Built on a rise looking down over a bend in the Tarangire river, which from about July onwards means watching elephant from the deck rather than driving out to find them. The baobabs here are the oldest living things on most people’s itinerary.

It is a quiet camp with a good kitchen and no ambitions beyond that.

What is good about it

  • Elephant visible from the deck in the dry season
  • Two hours from Arusha, so it works as a first night
  • Outstanding birding without leaving camp
  • Small enough that the staff learn your name

What to know before booking

  • Green season is much quieter for game: the elephant disperse from about November
  • The escarpment means steps, and quite a lot of them
  • No pool
  • Tsetse flies are present in parts of Tarangire and no camp can do anything about it
