The best month for a Tanzanian safari, honestly answered

Every operator gets asked this, and most answer “June to October” because it is dry, the grass is short and the animals gather at water. That is true, and it is also the answer that sells the most expensive weeks of the year. Here is the fuller version.

June to October: the dry season

The grass is low, the bush is thin, and animals concentrate around permanent water. Tarangire is at its very best from July. The Mara river crossings in the northern Serengeti run roughly late July to early October. Skies are clear and mornings are cold.

The costs: this is peak pricing, camps book out a year ahead, and the popular sightings draw vehicles.

November to December: the short rains

Short, sharp afternoon showers that rarely disrupt a game drive. The bush greens up, migrant birds arrive, and rates drop noticeably. A genuinely good window that most people overlook.

January to March: calving season

Around half a million wildebeest calves are born on the southern Serengeti short-grass plains in a window of about three weeks in February. Predator activity is the highest of the year. If you want to see cheetah hunting, this is the time, not July.

April and May: the long rains

The genuinely difficult months. Roads deteriorate, some camps close, and game viewing is harder because water is everywhere and animals disperse. In exchange: the lowest rates of the year, dramatic skies, and parks that feel empty.

So which month

Want the migration crossing a river? Late July to September, north Serengeti. Want predators and newborns? February, south Serengeti. Want elephant in numbers? July to October, Tarangire. Want the crater? Any month. It is good year-round. Want the lowest price and do not mind mud? April.
